Baker Street Irregular

not so much street urchin as art student
but they're pretty close

Rebecca Guay graduate with a degree in Illustration from Pratt Institute and began her career in 1992. She is best known for her painted graphic novels with DC Comics and her work on the game Magic: The Gathering. She has illustrated several children’s books and the covers of young adults’ novels, including Goddess: A World of Myth and Magic, and Black Pearls: A Faerie Strand. She has made special appearances at many Magic conventions and guest lectured at major art institutes, including the Savannah School of Art and Design, and the Rhode Island School of Design. Her art is in private collections around the world.

I was actually introduced to Guay’s work through the book mentioned above, Black Pearls, a collection of retold fairy tales that I’ll probably be buying soon solely for the art. Her illustrations have already been a major influence on my drawings, especially if you flip through my sketchbooks and look at most of the unfinished fantasy stuff. She has a very unique way of handling hair, cloth, and anatomy that reminds me of Mucha that I like a lot, and her color schemes don’t break any new ground but are always pretty to look at. That about sums it up, actually. Her stuff is pretty. Very very very very very pretty.
